What to include in a first message

| Rough age of the roof | Places the underlayment somewhere in its service life, which frames everything else. |
| Where water appears inside | Room, ceiling or wall, and how far from an exterior wall it is. |
| When it appears | Only in heavy or wind-driven rain, or continuously — this separates roof from plumbing and condensate. |
| Photos: interior stain and exterior elevations | Wide shots plus the ceiling area give a starting map of the water path. |
| Attic access, yes or no | The underside of the deck is often the most informative view available. |
| Any recent storm or work | Recent wind events or roof work narrows the list of likely causes quickly. |
| Neighbourhood | Coastal exposure and housing era shape which details tend to fail first. |
